In this digital era, people really seem to be more connected to each other. Yet, though we seem to be connected to one another, are we becoming more lonely and discontent with ourselves?
Many people believe that surrounding themselves with more people, having an intimate relationship and pilling up Facebook, Twitter or Instagram friends is the only way of fighting off periods of loneliness and to being happy.
There is no recipe for your contentment and loneliness other than engaging with yourself, knowing who you are and accepting you are who you are. The earlier you accept this in life and move with it, the easier and sweeter your life shall be. However, this cannot be developed without you learning how to be well on your own.
Well, do you know yourself perfectly well? Are you ready to find out? Where should you start?
It is perfectly fine to know that your heart wants to help you have the connection with your inner self.
It’s completely acceptable for you to ‘tune out’ from the rest of the world so that you can build a complete connection with your soul without any distractions. Remarkably in some ways, solitude for people is very uncommon, but it’s fine, so try it. I had a go for a 21 day period on my own on Dartmoor. In a few months time I will be repeating a solitude period for 40 days this time. Why? Because time alone teaches me more about myself.
Wanting to be alone is not about denouncing the world, rather you could use that chance to have a deeper engagement with yourself, and with your world in such a way that it brings you closer to wisdom, well-being, and wholeness.
Right now, we are pulled in so many different directions or distracted by so many things that we are so busy and never slowing down and going deep into our heart connections to see what our better, genuine self is. We seem to make everything else more important than what matters to us. The result is we lack a real connection with our inner selves, and essentially miss out on our true purpose in life.
So, embrace solitude. By embracing solitude, you will discover the many opportunities it offers you, including creative nurturing, self-realization, independent travel, psychological healing, improved relationships, improved mental attitude and spiritual exploration among others. All these things are vital for you to know yourself inside out and to have a meaningful life.
I do need to say, that you do not have to go off somewhere for long periods of time, although that is good to do if you have the opportunity. Taking a day away from your friends, partner, children and home can achieve the same results, albeit more slowly.
Your Mental Attitude as the Key!
We are all beings of thought, meaning our mental attitude determines our condition in life. So if your mental attitude is genuinely lovable and peaceable, blessedness and bliss will follow you. On the flip side, if you put limitations on your nature, you create the boundary lines around your mental attitude and thoughts. They will be like self-erected fences that draw you to a narrower circle hemmed in by doubt, anxiety and pessimism.
You are the thinker of your thoughts as much as you are also the maker of them. Generally speaking, out of ill-will comes disaster and grief and out of good will come, healing and reparation. There are no accidents in your mental attitude, both its antagonism and harmonies are the responsive echoes of what your thoughts are all about. What you think appears in your life (some people refer to this as The Law of Attraction).
How to Alter Your Mental Attitude
As you think of doing something, remember you are today where your thoughts brought you, but you can be tomorrow somewhere different according to where you allow your thoughts to take you.
You cannot escape the results of your mental attitude, but you can endure, learn, accept, be glad and alter your thoughts. Strive to perceive the grandeur and vastness of your responsibility to alter your mental attitude. People will remain ignorant simply because they love ignorance.
You are not powerless. You are powerful to obey or disobey, strong to be pure or impure, ready for wisdom or ignorance, but if you love knowledge, wisdom and purity, you will obtain it by altering your thoughts. Your mental attitude waits to connect with yourself and is your acceptance and what your thoughts entertain. When you understand the law of your mind, you will attain a strong mental attitude and cease seeing yourself as an impotent blind tool.
Do you look at someone and wonder what is going on in their mind and heart? Well, this is the kind of question you need to ask yourself each day, especially as you are on a spiritual path.
Many people are unable to read their feelings, manage their emotions or even create an emotionally rich relationship. We can lack the emotional intelligence that acts as a connection to our spiritual being which prevents us from exploring the farthest reaches of the universe.
We take pride in monitoring our body appearance by keeping fit to increase our physical energy and eat well, yet when it comes to tapping our spiritual energy source, we come out empty. Getting to know who we are inside out involves getting in touch with our spirituality and embracing it.
So, what now?
Getting to know yourself includes getting to know your personality, core values, body, dreams, likes and dislikes and fears. A great way that I got to know these things was by embracing solitude, altering my mental attitude and embracing my spirituality. This will allow you to tap into your well of happiness beyond your imagination even on cloudy days. So, take a peek under that mask you wear and see the real you, the real beauty!
